Aalto University School of Science - Aalto
The Aalto University is the oldest and premier research university in Finland (formerly Helsinki University of Technology TKK) and a pioneer in the field of technology in the country. It received university status in 1908. The N5TeAM-programme is coordinated by the Aalto University School of Science, Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis. Aalto coordinates also the student application and admission procedure for all study tracks.
Engineering Mathematics has been a major at Helsinki University of Technology (nowadays part of Aalto University) since 1960's. The Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis continues to be the unit of highest education in theoretical and applied mathematics especially for areas in technology. Its main task is to educate engineers interested in and capable of constructing mathematical models for complex problems and finding solution methods for them. The application areas have been varied from celestieal mechanics to electron stuctures of molecules and from medical imaging to dynamics of finance. Further information see http://mathsys.tkk.fi/en/
Key academic personnel
Prof. Timo Eirola is the director of the N5TeAM programme. He is also coordinating Computational Science and Engineering degree programme at Aalto. His main areas in research and teaching are numerical analysis and dynamical systems.
Prof. Rolf Stenberg is professor of Mechanics and Numerical Analysis at Aalto University. He works on the development and analysis of finite element methods for problems in continuum mechanics.
PhD student Linda Havola (N5TeAM Academic Coordinaror at Aalto) works on the development of mathematics teaching at Aalto University.
